It is a member of the Trahiras family. It is native to Central and South America in the São Francisco, Amazon, Paraná, Orinoco and Magdalena River basins, and coastal rivers in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It can reach a maximum length of 28.5cm (about 11 inches).
