It is a member of the cichlid family. Its native range is South America: Amazon River basin in Peru, Colombia and Brazil. It can reach a length of 45.7 cm (18 in) with a max weight of 1.6 kg (3.5 lbs). It prefers quiet shallow waters in mud-bottomed and sand-bottomed canals and ponds.
